Our Mission

AWAY is a nonprofit organization that aims to help Asian-American youth destigmatize mental wellness through creative expression. We highlight art and writing that tackles issues pertinent to the AAPI community, such as differing intergenerational mindsets, the immigrant experience, and harmful cultural stereotypes. By encouraging AAPI youth to interact with others' work and contribute their own, AWAY serves as both a creative outlet for and a reminder that mental health is important and universal – no one should be alone in their struggles. Ultimately, we hope to create a culture-conscious community where conversations around mental wellness are not only welcomed, they are celebrated.

Our Story

AWAY began with the vision that talking about mental health shouldn't have to be taboo, particularly for Asian-American families, where it is typically approached with shame and secrecy. We believe that art and writing are powerful and cathartic entry points to facilitate the destigmatization of these discussions.

Based in the San Francisco Bay Area, our team will create an online platform and digital community for young AAPI voices nationwide. By submitting to AWAY, contributors are spreading this vibrant vision of mental wellness destigmatization and authentic expression across geography and generations. It is up to the youth to change the world, and AWAY is proud to promote change within the AAPI community to achieve our vision of mental well-being for all.
